Chrysler Seized By Obama

In case you've missed it, president Obama has used taxpayer money to buy shares in a failing US automaker (and given much of the controlling interest to the autoworkers' union. He has also attacked the investors into selling their priority shares for 1/3 of their value after declaring them to be common shares.
In his attacks he called the investors "hedge fund managers" and told them they needed to sacrifice for their country ... even though Obama hasn't sacrificed anything over the deal except for other people's tax dollars.
This is going to make people very unlikely to invest in the US economy. I will certainly avoid investing in any US automakers.
I've seen a couple articles on RCP criticizing Obama on the issue, but it has stayed out of the mainstream media spotlight. Here is an excerpt from a Bloomberg article:
The Obama administration brokered a deal that gave labor unions a 55 percent equity stake in Chrysler, putting their interests ahead of the secured interests of bondholders.
The bondholder response to the deal was positively creepy.
Politicians were probably offering them a worse deal than they could expect to get in bankruptcy court. Bondholders that have been participating in the government bailout program for banks -- and thus are especially susceptible to political pressure -- agreed to accept the deal. But many of the independent investors balked.
...
Stories circulated that the Treasury Department exerted extreme pressure behind the scenes when investors refused to take the deal. Public pressure was exerted as well.
President Barack Obama went to the podium to criticize the recalcitrant investors, and Democratic Representative John Dingell of Michigan pressed the threats even harder: “The rogue hedge funds that refused to agree to a fair offer to exchange debt for cash from the U.S. Treasury -- firms I label as the ‘vultures’ -- will now be dealt with accordingly in court,” Dingell said.
I recommend reading the whole article. There's a good comparison to the mafia making an offer "they can't refuse".
It also mentions that the Big Three automakers in the US spend 1.7x as much on car production as Japan! This is an expense imposed from runaway labor unions that get passed onto the customer. No, thanks Chrysler, Ford, GM. I'll stick to my Honda Civic.

That's interesting. Despite the sympathy I have with Obama's view of hedge fund investors, I think he should let these bankrupt auto-companies die gradually. As you mentioned, Asian countries produce them much more efficiently and so it's only inevitable that the US car manufacturers will lose a great deal of market share. You can't have free trade without the process of specialisation and creative destruction destroying a few industries. Where I disagree with you is probably the extent to which the Government should aid the displaced people into new jobs. You have to admit alot of people will be severely affected should these behemoth companies collapse over a short period of time.
If the non-TARP banks hadn't stood up to him then Obama would have had the sweet deal of his choosing, that of 50% control to the government and 50% to the union. That is what he also hopes for with GM. That is the definition of the word, fascism; the marrying of corporations with government. Of course, all of this is illegal and unconstitutional, as is what has happened with the banks, but it seems there is nothing that can be done about a popular president running amouk. I know congress will do nothing.
After his sweet deal failed to materialize in Chrysler, Obama took it upon himself to try and rewrite bankruptsy law by giving his restructuring plan to the judge. I hope the judge has as much courage and fortitude as the non-TARP banks and obey the law and not Obama.
Every week is a new worry with this guy...
Timothy,
All Americans are being severely affected by Obama's bullying and controling and illegal behavior in ways that are much longer lasting than economic hardship. We are losing our freedom at a rapid pace.
Under our Constitution, the government has no business controling private business.
Hi Tim,
I'm not opposed to the government providing some limited job transition training. NASA is doing some of that with the shuttle replacement, to some degree of success. If I were an employee at GM, I wouldn't place my cards so as to depend on it, though.
Lady L,
A good point to touch on the unconstitutionality of it. This is all going to be tested in court, and I'm not sure where the legal analysts are placing their bets. I think BO will get away with it legally, but this will not reflect well on him in the 2012 elections. Then again, he has done his best campaigning with things glaring against him. Axelrod was excellent with the message discipline thing.
Matt,
If the balance in Congress isn't changed in 2010, I don't think we'll have a chance in 2012. A marker of the neo-progs is that they believe in doing just about anything to keep the Republicans out. There is no other reason for Obama to seize the census than for the power of being able to manipulate it in favor of Democrats. Declaring amnesty for illegal Mexican aliens is also a power grab for Dems. Add all of this to the fact that the Reps can't make up their minds whether they are conservatives or just liberals who believe in tax cuts and things look hopeless. I still believe, however, that the majority of Americans are middle of the road conservative and we believe as strongly in the Constitution and American values and principles as ever. The Independent party is growing like crazy and many are now calling it the conservative party. If so, we need to be getting candidates to run...of course, I have no idea how to go about that! Then again, maybe that is why God has allowed all of this; to wake us up and be active within the free system that He has blessed us with.
Yikes, splitting a party is always a recipe for defeat. Lincoln would have probably lost his first election if the democrats hadn't split (for example). Believe it or not the democrats are losing as many people to the independents as the Republicans are.
Matt,
That is true about Dem deflections. I too am concerned about Conservatives being split among too many parties but my husband said that all of us can only vote for the candidates provided and at least, in 2010, those are likely to be Reps. I'm just praying that they are conservative Reps...
